Minutes of meeting held-10/19/10
Present-Laura Kennedy, Co-Chair, Anthony Calabrese, Joan Fisher, Maria Caffaro, Maryalice Fegeley, Janice Katz.
Discussion included issues still of a concern to families including transportation services and issues of travel time, Transition Planning for post school activities. Related Services RSA is still a challenge for families to secure therapists. Maryalice shared the information regarding a recent workshop sponsored by the United States Office of Civil Rights that was extremely informative on issues pertaining to Section 504, Title II of ADA and IDEA. This group is available and willing to provide a workshop on Staten Island. Workshop must take place during business hours. We asked Maryalice to inquire to see if a workshop, (1/2 Day) is possible during the month of January to be held at IBR. She will follow up.
Discussed the NYS Disability Awareness Project that the Education Committee is supporting. Ms. Catherine Herrick of People, Inc. is the guest speaker for the general council meeting, to be held on October 22.nd This initiative includes the work that gave rise to the Disability Awareness Day Legislation that was recently signed by Governor Paterson. In addition, the Project is pursuing the extension through legislation of the current Disability Awareness curriculum that is already in place for grades K-4th, to be extended to grade 12. In light of promoting inclusion in our schools, this is an important project for our group to support and encourage.
The next meeting will be held on November 16th at the ECRC in the Executive Conference Room at 9:30AM.
